Customer Review: Good combination PDA/GPS
I bought this for my husband. He needed a PDA to keep his schedule straight but I got this because he just got a new car and also wanted a GPS. I liked that it was a combined unit for a relatively low price.

After we figured out that we needed to get a 2gb MMC card so he could upload the maps (the on-board memory isn’t big enough), he really settled down and started to use it. Now it’s his best friend.

He likes that it’s a Palm based PDA, so there are lots of software available for pretty much anything he needs. He also likes the GPS as you can change the magnification depending on if you need fine detail or are on a long trip and just want to see where the next turn will be. The Garmin GPS is actually better than my Garmin stand-alone.

It may not be the best model out there, but the PDA side has the basics that anyone is going to need (plus you can upload anything else you may want later). The GPS is very impressive as well, although we haven’t tried it on some of the newer areas, so I don’t know how recently the map is updated.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for both a PDA and GPS, but may not need all the bells and whistles. I would suggest buying a memory card at the same time though. You will definately need it.

Customer Review: What a great item!
I love my Garmin iQue 3200! It has quickly become known by all who know me as “my friend.” I can now go just about anywhere in this beautiful country without fear of getting lost. My wife and I love to explore, so “my friend” has made that a joy. I love maps and driving around, so this tool is a definite must.

Pros: Easy to use. Quality navigation. Great versatility. Able to use as GPS system and business organizer. Graphics are old, but still show great directions.

Cons: No text-to-speech. Too early for Real-Time traffic updates. Too early for Bluetooth capabilities.

Overall: The Garmin iQue 3200 is a great product and a necessary unit to have, especially when in a new area. Gone is the need for Mapquest print outs and a navigator in shotgun to fight with over missed turns. “My friend” makes traveling fun and enjoyable.

TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
TomTom is going for the ultimate in portability with the 2008 ONE 130 and ONE 130S by integrating a nifty fold-out mount right into the devices. No more trying to figure out where to stash that big, clunky mount in your car — just pop it off, fold it up and carry the whole thing in your pocket. Of course, the ONE 130 series also features the plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we’ve come to expect from TomTom.

The ONE 130S adds text-to-speech to the base 130 model. This means instead of hearing “turn right in 50 feet”, you’ll hear, “turn right in 50 feet at Ohio Street”. In our experience, this is probably the most useful step-up feature for a GPS navigator, and if your looking at the 130, we’d definitely recommend stepping up to at least the 130S.

It is the only tool you need to manage, update and personalize your TomTom to enjoy a premium navigation experience: buy and install maps, make back-ups, download free software updates, shop and much more.
  • Stay up-to-date - always get the latest TomTom software and updates.
  • Personalize - Add new points of Interest, routes, voices, colour schemes and more.
  • Enhance - buy maps, subscribe to traffic and safety camera information services (optional).

QuickGPSfix

Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you’re in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted, for example by passing high buildings, the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.

QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer and TomTom HOME automatically downloads `QuickGPSfix’ - a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.

This unique free service - which comes as standard with the GO (920/720/520/910/710/510) and ONE (XL/New Edition) helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.

On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same `QuickGPSfix’ data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection (GO 920/720/520/910/710/510 and ONE XL/3RD EDITION and 2nd Edition). As soon as a connection is established, the `QuickGPSfix’ data is automatically updated.

Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.

To minimise the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select `Disable Auto QuickGPSfix’ on your TomTom device.

Fun Extras to Personalize Your TomTom

New smart & fun extras to personalize users’ devices
  • Recording driving instructions in your own voice
  • Buy fun voices from TomTom
  • Exchange files (of photos, songs, HTML documents, etc) between your GO and any other Bluetooth-enabled device (laptop, phone, other TomToms)
  • Select a favorite car icon on the screen
  • Load, store and preview photos from your digital camera.
  • Enjoy music with the built-in MP3 player (earphones connector available via an optional SD card)

TomTom Traffic

With an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory, you can get traffic information from the RDS-TMC Traffic service, which is delivered over unused FM radio channels.

Traffic information is fully integrated into the TomTom navigation experience.

The RDS-TMC receiver is available as an accessory for the GO 930/730/530, 920/720/520, 910/710/510, ONE 3rd edition, ONE XL, ONE (30 series) and XL (30 series).

The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service

With some TomTom models, an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is included in the box. This is indicated by the addition of “T” or “Traffic” to the model name. An example is “ONE Traffic”.
.

Key features

  • Real-time traffic information across the US, using the most accurate and up-to-date sources.
  • Detailed incident reports, delay times estimated, alternative routes proposed and if enabled automatic rerouting.
  • Accurate real-time warnings about dangerous road conditions ahead (fog, snow, ice and so on) anywhere in Europe, Australia and the US. (TomTom application version 6.0 or higher)
  • Clear on-screen animated or spoken (GO 920/720/520/910) traffic alerts as and when you want them.
  • Smart push technology which minimizes the amount of data needed to update traffic information on your device
  • Smart subscription - when you buy new maps, the Traffic service automatically becomes available in those countries too.

Customer Review: SAME GREAT TOMTOM NAME BUT NO REASON TO UPGRADE
Here is the latest in TomTom technology. The TomTom 130. This latest development from TomTom will be perfect for first time GPS buyers who are looking for something simple, compact, and accurate. For previous owners of the TomTom One however, this is no reason to upgrade.

The product itself is as close to perfection as I’ve seen in a basic GPS device, hence the five star rating, but then again so is the TomTom One 3rd edition that was released late last year. The TomTom 130 model is basically the TomTom One with a few minor upgrades. The most notable would be the new flip and fold mounting capability. Instead of the standard suction cup mount that TomTom owners are used to owning as a separate component (one that slides in and out of the back custom grooves of the TomTom itself) there is now an attached mount that folds into the unit for easy storage. This is convenient but in my opinion and like the other minor upgrades, no reason to toss out your old TomTom One in exchange.

iPod has set the standard for a lot of electronic thresholds, none being more noticeable than the size and depth of its products. To some it up.slim is in and the TomTom 130 is even slimmer than its big brother the TomTom One weighing in at a 6.1 ounces and only 1 inch in depth. Here are the some minor specs:

    Unit Size: 3.8″H x 3.2″W x 1″D

    Display Size: 3.5″ (Diagonal)

    Weight: 6.1 oz

Also worth noting is the TomTom 130 now boasts a 3 hour battery charge instead of the paltry 2 hour that left TomTom One owners completely dependent on the cigarette chargers in their cars. 3 hours isn’t exactly a wealth of time but it is an improvement and a little more realistic.

Also included with the product is TomTom’s exclusive Map Share feature that allows users to make their own map corrections and share them with other TomTom customers through their online connection using the TomTom Home software on their PC. This service is free of charge.

This has been the subject of some confusion among TomTom users and should be pointed out. Some customers mistakenly think the Map Share updates they receive are entire map upgrades. This is not so. Although TomTom does provide its customers with Map Share updates free of charge these only include minor map modifications, such as dead end streets that weren’t marked properly or points-of-interest that were marked out of place. These Map Share updates do not include the miles of new roads being built every year across America & Canada. In order to receive these major map updates customers will have to pay for them.

Of course the TomTom 130 will already come included with the latest Tele Atlas which is now version 720.1802, and although TomTom has major map upgrades throughout the year most customers (including myself) will be content with just paying for an upgrade once a year. This guarantees that you will always have the latest maps with the newest roads.

Like the TomTom One 3rd Edition the TomTom 130 comes with a “Help Me” button which when pressed opens features such as “Phone For Help” which displays emergency numbers for the current location (such as and typically 911) “Drive To Help” which show you the quickest way to the nearest police station or hospital and a “First Aid Guide” which is provided by the British Red Cross.

Also included in the safety features is an option to sound a custom alarm if any of the following occur:

    1. When approaching a school or church

    2. When driving faster than a set speed

    3. When driving faster than allowed

The 130 still uses the same TomTom touch screen user-interface so prior TomTom users will already be familiar with the controls but with such a user friendly design even new customers will have the hang of it in no time. The screen is a bright 3.5 inch full TFT color LCD with 320 x 240 pixels that supports 64K colors.

For first time GPS buyers this unit is perfect because of its price, portability, latest maps, outstanding user-interface, and simplicity. For someone looking to upgrade to something a little more advanced try the TomTom 130S with text-to-speech capability (verbal pronunciation of street names).

Customer Review: Great Mount For Most GPS units
This is an excellent way to have a portable mount

Had never used a GPS before, and was delighted with this TOM-TOM. It exceeded all my expectations for a very good price.

Customer Review: TomTom One 3rd Edition
For our trip to Las Vegas we bought this GPS device. We stayed in Henderson and went to various shops and shoppingcenters.

Pro’s: What a fantastic product this is. Just turn it on and you are on your way. Select fastest or shortest route. No difficult setup needed. It does what it is supposed to do: without any problems it brings you perfectly to your desired destination. Great feature is the possibility to prepare routes. Nice voices to select from and different colour schemes. Fast satellite hookup. As a Dutchman I am proud of this Dutch product! Hook it on your computer to update with latest maps via Mapshare. Add hundreds of POI’s to the millions that are already pre-installed, such as Denny’s, Subway’s, you name it. So hesitate no longer. I used Garmin last year and this TomTom One 3rd Edition is definitely the better choice.

    Con’s: none discovered.

Garmin StreetPilot c340 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin StreetPilot c340 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
If you’re looking for vehicle navigation that’s powerful and simple to use, the Garmin StreetPilot c340 is just the ticket. Right out of the box, this unit helps you make the right turns wherever your travels take you. With an easy-to-use touchscreen interface, text-to-speech voice commands, a brilliant display that shows the way with 2D or 3D animations, and a massive points of interest database, the c340 has all the basics covered. Plus, you’ll find some great additional features that make it a must-have companion.

Look Mom, no buttons! Garmin has taken simplicity to a new level with the c340.

The c340 is designed with simplicity in mind, although Garmin hasn’t forgotten to add a touch of class. With a weight of under ten ounces and a width of 4.4 inches, the c340 is ultracompact and easy to transport. To keep confusion on the road to a minimum, the only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The bright 3.5-inch-diagonal display features a touchscreen, making it a snap to input routing information and make quick selections on the road. The c340 sports dual integrated speakers for high-quality voice prompts, a USB port for PC connectivity, and an internal lithium-ion battery that provides power when you’re planning your routes outside the car (approximately 4-8 hours battery life). In addition to an included 12-volt power adapter for in-car power, there’s also an SD memory card expansion slot for use with other Garmin MapSource mapping products. The unit is secured by a suction-mount cradle that fastens to the windshield, allowing for easy portability between vehicles. You can even customize the c340’s appearance with optional colored faceplates that suit your style. While the c340 has an internal GPS antenna, it also has an MCX-type connector for hooking up an optional external GPS antenna.

Finding your way with the c340 starts with inputting a location on the touch screen. Next, the unit’s text-to-speech feature speaks to you just like a back seat driver, telling you the names of streets and when to turn and in what direction. And if you happen to miss a turn–don’t worry, the c340 automatically calculates a new route to your destination. Audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings help you navigate more quickly while keeping your eyes on the road. You can also choose between a 3D mapping perspective or 2D overhead view.

    The c340 offers clear, easy-to-read 3D directions.

Another time- and frustration-saving feature of the c340 is the database of preloaded maps and points of interest. Gone are the days of uploading partial maps from your computer to your GPS device: the c340 has them all built in. The unit comes preloaded with Garmin’s highly detailed City Select NT street data of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Finding points of interest along your route is made easy with the c340’s huge built-in database of nearly six million hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin has also made it easy for users to upload custom points of interest–now you can add school zones or safety cameras to your database. You can even turn on a proximity alert to notify you of upcoming custom points of interest.

Garmin really kicks the power of the c340 up a notch with the addition of real-time traffic information. This optional service will display congested areas on a color-coded map, allowing you to avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that calculates a new route. All this wizardry is made possible by the new Garmin GTM 10 receiver that connects to the c340 and other select Garmin products. Note that while the GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe, note that these traffic services are available only in select cities where coverage exists. The service requires the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver and, in some cases, a subscription to enable these traffic capabilities.

    What’s in the Box
StreetPilot c340 receiver with built-in antenna, dual internal speaker system for voice guidance and alerts, vehicle suction cup mount with 12-24 volt adapter, dashboard disk, USB interface cable, preloaded City Select North America NT database, and quick-reference guide.

Customer Review: Excellent GPS real good.
Pretty nice and compact GPS and worked really well under all conditions and calculated pretty fast. Real good buy and worth every penny.

Gave a 4 instead of 5 for the only reason that suction type stand was difficult to take off the mirror and had to pull real hard.

    But gave perfect directions.

    Customer Review: Garmin c340
I bought this for work and my wife keeps stealing it. Anyone can program it. The c340 has had most of the address that I needed and was correct in getting me there. I even use it in rental cars when I travel. Be sure to get the beanbag type mount so you can move it from car to car. The suction cup one that comes with it is not very handy

Customer Review: Lowcost Bluetooth - GPS with Quirky Interface HP iPAQ 310
A low price with these features means a confusing unexplained GUI and the slowest web site for software upgrades and map updates I have ever encountered. The latest application upgrade is markedly better than the one on the unit when I bought it! Price is right and plays music & videos if you add extra memory.

    Customer Review: Hewlett-Packard IpaQ
I just recently purchased the Hewlett-Packard iPAQ 310 Bluetooth 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator. It was easy to use rt out the box. The software was easy to install. I used it twice so far on road trips and it was a sinch to use. A must buy, worth every penny.^

Navigon 2100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Navigon 2100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
In the U.S., German-based Navigon may be the biggest name in GPS you’ve never heard. Navigon has long been a major provider of navigation software to automotive manufacturers for in-dash gps navigation devices, but only recently did they introduce portable navigation devices under their own name. What they offer up, however, demonstrates immediately that this is a company that knows navigation inside and out.

The 2100 is the lowest-priced (and smallest) of Navigon’s line of portable GPS navigators. While it lacks some of the features of it’s bigger siblings, the 7100 and 5100, it packs solid navigation and some unique features into its diminutive frame.

The Navigon Family of Portable Navigators
The 2100 and 5100 have 3.5-inch screens, while the 7100 has a 4.3-inch widescreen. The big difference is that the 5100 and 7100 come with free lifetime traffic data, while with the 2100 you have to buy an activation code separately. The 5100 and 7100 have a feature called “Lane Assistant” that will suggest which lane you should be driving in, but that’s not such a big deal. Another important difference is that the 7100 also adds bluetooth-capability for hands-free mobile phone integration, which is really handy. If you want that feature, do check out the 7100. This chart may help as well.

Screen Size (diagonally) Bluetooth Lifetime Traffic Data Service Lane Assistant Reality View Zagat Ratings POIs
2100 3.5 inches Requires Purchase of Activation Code check 1.3 million
5100 3.5 inches Included Free check check check millions
7100 4.3 inches check Included Free check check check millions

Intuitive, animated menus offer predictive text input, helping you select your destination quickly. View larger.

The reality view guides you with photo-realistic 3D images of junctions. View larger.

Navigon decided not to try to add multimedia features like a photo viewer or MP3 player into its devices, but instead focused on navigation-based features. The 2100 provides precise turn-by-turn directions, including spoken road names via text-to-speech

Reality view guides you with photo-realistic 3D images of junctions, complete with actual sign text and exit ramp guidance. This makes translating what the navigator is telling you to what you see on the road instantaneous.

    Superior Software and Hardware
The features and functions of the Navigon 2100 are controlled via intuitive, easy-to-use animated menus that use predictive text input to quickly and easily select your city, state and address. Maps and menus appear on its extra-large and elegant, high-contrast 3.5-inch, full-color touch-screen display. The 5100 includes a powerful Samsung 400 MHz processor, a fully integrated SiRF Star III GPS chip, 64 MBs of both RAM and ROM built in, and a rechargeable 1,200 mAh lithium ion battery that is rated for 4.5 hours of continuous use. All this is housed in an ultra-thin, sleek chrome housing that weighs only 6.3 ounces, and measures just 4.2 x 3.3 x 0.9 inches (W x H x D). The Navigon 5200 even comes pre-loaded with complete maps of the U.S. and Canada, providing you with superbly accurate, seamless door-to-door directions wherever your vehicular travels might take you.

Note that the 2100 runs on the Microsoft Windows CD Net 5.0 operating system. A PC is required to use additional map data, and in such cases users require Windows 2000, ME, XP or higher, as well as a CD ROM drive and a USB port. An SD/MMC card reader is recommended as the 7100 not only uses SD cards, but also comes with a 2 GB SD card in the package.

    What’s in the Box

Navigon 2100 GPS Navigator, SD card preloaded with software and maps of the continental US, rechargeable 1150 mAH lithium ion battery (rated for up to 4.5 hours),
car charger, car mount, quickstart guide, limited warranty

    Customer Review: Navigon 2100
This is my first GPS but I did quite a bit of research on the different brands, and feel I made an informed decision For the money this seems to be packed with features. The maps look excellent on the screen. I don’t like the power cord being on the bottom of the unit, and the sound could be a little louder, but other than that I am very pleased.

Customer Review: Does not work in Florida, can’t find addresses.
I bought this Navigon about a month ago, and took it to Florida to visit relatives, I could never find the addresses by typing them, but If I get there without the GPS, I could save the location and then go back to the same location without problems. The thing is that when using a GPS is to find a route without even getting there. I have inquire with Navigon support without an answer, so I want to alert those guys that live in Florida that this GPS the Navigon 2100 is not a good option, even with the new upgrade 1.2
